SO VERY SIMPLE! Bust Your Charm Pack Stash with Disappearing 9-Patch Quilt Block

Hi Reader,

There are three quilt block techniques that always get quilters excited. First is a rag quilt, most likely because they are very easy and don't require traditional quilting. That makes them a perfect quilting-for-beginners choice. Second is the disappearing 9-patch. The initial block is a simple 9-patch which is then cut into multiple pieces and rearranged into some very interesting designs. Third is the potato chip block. It's definitely been a favorite of mine, too! The allure here is how much scrap fabric you can go through with this block. Plus the layout options are fun to work with.

Today's quilt is a scrappy disappearing 9-patch. They have been popular for years yet we can always find a new twist. This is actually a very simple variation of the original pattern but getting the colors in the right place makes an incredible difference.

If you're interested in cutting your own precuts, my post How to Cut a Fat Quarter for Quilting has a tutorial to do just that. You may also download my Free PDF Fat Quarter Cutting Guide with cutting layouts and yardage requirements for different precuts.

I have a lot ahead of me with these four twin quilts to work on. Fortunately they are simple and go together easily. There is a chance I may need to cut more charms to finish them. Luckily there's always another basket of scrap fabrics to dig into! Keep watching and see how they turn out.

Now I have to start thinking about the backing for each of them. As shown in this backing post, I enjoy piecing my backs with lots of fabrics. The one I'm specifically thinking about, is the brown one shown in the post that was made from fat quarters. It was made for my cousin and I knew he preferred darker colors.

This is a perfect choice because I can simply cut blocks to fit the size of the quilt top. Plus I can use some of the same colors used, too. But first, I still have two more quilt tops to be made. I already know which one will be next and am excited to get started! But that won't be until tomorrow.

Today, my new garden is waiting for me. My husband and I have definitely become full-fledged retirees! We've become backyard bird watchers. Now we're building a 'bird-sanctuary' for our feathered friends. I've been gathering flowering plants to attract the birds, but that may not be necessary with my husband's feeder ideas.

My husband, the engineer, has a plan as all engineers do! The feeder itself has cross pieces to hold multiple feeders for different types of birds. Then of course we have the aluminum tubing around the bottom 6-feet to keep any clawed-climbers from intruding. It has been camouflaged with some brown and black spray paint. It's not very visible as he's standing in front of it. I'll get a better picture next week.

Next we need to work on the post top so our yard doesn't look like a cemetery. πŸ˜‚

Now that spring has arrived, pay a visit to your fabrics and find the perfect piece for your next quilt. Spring fabrics are my favorite as they are covered with flowers and lots of beautiful colors.

Thanks so much for following along. Have a great rest of your week!

Hi Reader, YAY πŸ₯³ MY WEBSITE IS BACK AND WORKING! Thank you so much for understanding and being so supportive while my website was down these last few weeks. Due to some idiot hacker, my site was totally inoperable! With lots of help, everything is now operating as it should. There are some new articles I still need to add and will let you know when they are posted. To keep my internet-frustration to a minimum, of course I just kept quilting! Here are some new videos you may not have seen yet....

Hi Reader, Wow, it's been a month and it's only the 14th! My website has been a blank white screen for two weeks. More commonly referred to the 'white screen of death'! It was hacked and getting it back in operation has taken some time. But now it's back online...EXCEPT that I can't add any new posts. There are a number of posts for new quilts I've been working on and hopefully I can get them online soon. In the meantime, here's today's video. It's a demonstration/tutorial for the orange peel...
